What is An Assisted Living Community?

Assisted living communities are care communities for older adults who require some level of assistance to function in daily life. There is a wide range of types of assistance available and many communities provide the option to have progressively increasing levels of care as it’s needed.

Some assisted living communities focus primarily on serving residents with certain types of illnesses (for example, Alzheimer’s or dementia). Other elder care communities, however, offer services for residents with any type of illness or need.

We’ve talked about assisted living communities on the blog before (read more here!). Today we’re going to specifically address why assisted living is becoming such a common long-term care option for older adults.

More Options Than Ever in Assisted Living Homes

Assisted living facilities, with their wide range of services, provide a senior housing solution for adults who can live independently, but also require some assistance.

Assisted living is so desirable because it provides a level of care for seniors so they can continue to enjoy their lives even while they are impacted by Alzheimer’s or dementia. Assisted living homes now have more options than ever before as far as care, food, and activities.

Assisted Living Communities are ADAPTABLE

Many seniors and their family members are drawn to housing solutions that offer flexible and adaptable options. For example, many homes have extra services that can be added on when residents need them. These might include palliative care, respite, short-term care, and hospice.

At MesaView Senior Assisted Living, we provide palliative care and hospice care accommodations when they are needed. As a resident’s condition progresses, they can receive increasing levels of care, all while staying in an environment where they are already comfortable and with caregivers who have a genuine connection with them.

Assisted Living Communities Provide Seniors with Basic Daily Care

Care communities vary from one another. Different states actually have different licensing laws and regulations. Every assisted living home will provide daily monitoring and basic care. Some communities are connected to medical buildings or have access to an on-call physician 24/7.

Some of the most common basic services provided in assisted living communities include:

Laundry and cleaning

Fitness and mobility classes

24/7 security & supervision

Certified and skilled nurses & caregivers

Three meals/day plus snacks

Accomodations for various medical services

Dressing and bathing

Medication management

Holistic programs (eg: music, art, social gatherings, holiday celebrations)

Appropriate & accessible transportation (we now provide booking for a wheelchair accessible van!)

Assisted Living Communities Are VERSATILE

Elders and their families are drawn to the versatility of care communities. From interior design, to location, to the services provided, there are so many different types of assisted living homes available.

Some communities offer rooms where loved ones or partners can stay long-term or while they visit. Costs also vary widely and trends suggest that assisted living will become increasingly affordable as California’s population ages.
