Top Memory Care and Assisted Living Community in San Diego, California

MesaView Senior Assisted Living is a family owned and operated independent and assisted living community in La Mesa, California. Our owners have firsthand experience of having loved ones with Alzheimer’s and dementia and know all that goes into making decisions around memory care for a loved one.

We walk alongside families as they traverse the difficult road of Alzheimer’s and have been supporting the greater San Diego community for a decade. In addition to independent and assisted living care, we also provide accommodations for hospice care.

At Mesa View Senior Assisted Living (and at our partner locations, Harbor View Senior Assisted Living and Bay View Assisted Living) we strive to provide compassionate, individualized care, preserving our residents’ dignity at every stage of their Alzheimer’s journey.

Walking Provides Many Benefits for Older Adults

Walking is a fantastic low impact exercise option for seniors. It provides cardiovascular benefits while being easy on joints. It also helps older adults maintain and improve balance, flexibility, endurance, and strength. These are the four core fitness areas for seniors identified by the National Institute on Aging.

Additionally, walking provides great opportunities to connect socially and spend time in nature. Experiences in nature reduce depression, anxiety, and stress, all risk factors for older adults affected by Alzheimer’s and dementia.

Lake Murray Walking Trails

Located near our assisted living community in La Mesa, California, Lake Murray is a popular area for birding, fishing, road biking, and walking. Though the Lake Murray trail is 5.7 miles total, the elevation gain is only 108 ft, which means it’s a flat, easy route to complete.

The trail is open year-round and is beautiful to visit at any time, though it’s important to consider sun protection and hydration in the summer. It takes an average of 1 hour and 45 minutes to complete. If you want to take a furry friend along, make sure to note that dogs must be on a leash at all times.

There is a parking lot conveniently located near the trailhead. There is ample parking available.

Special Considerations for Individuals Impacted by Alzheimer’s

In the early phases of dementia, it might still be possible for individuals to go out on their own. Once a patient enters the moderate phase of cognitive decline, however, it is unsafe for them to be alone, even for short periods of time. The moderate phase begins when individuals require some help with their basic activities of daily living.

It’s important for your loved one to continue to get time outdoors and in nature, however, caregivers must stay close at all times to prevent wandering. Alzheimer’s affected individuals may also experience problems with balance, which can make walking increasingly challenging. Devices that assist with mobility can be useful.
