How to Stay Active As a Family All Summer Long

Staying Active Together All Summer

Between summer sports, kids camps, work schedules, and back-to-school doctor’s appointments, the summer months can feel like a hectic juggling act. Staying active as a family can be a great way to bond and take a breather together during busy summer schedules. From the youngest to the oldest members of the family, there are many great activities that everyone can participate in.

But before you hit the ground running, remember to incorporate sun protection, adequate hydration, and plenty of rest if older adults participate.

Keep reading for easy and fun ways to stay active as a family throughout the summer!

5 Ways to Stay Active (for Free!) With the Whole Family

Run Through the Sprinkler: Summer activities don’t have to be complicated. Grab some old towels, get everyone in their swimsuits and sunscreen, and turn the sprinkler on! Set up a comfortable, shady spot for an older loved one to enjoy some time outdoors safely. Bonus points if your kids can also jump on the trampoline after getting soaked by the sprinkler!

Plant a Garden: Many older family members have had a lot of gardening experience! Tap into their knowledge by starting your very own family garden this summer. This could mean planting some tomatoes and squash in a couple of raised garden beds or planting a row of wildflowers on one side of your backyard.

Lemonade Stand: If your elderly loved one isn’t up for too much activity, a lemonade stand is the perfect thing to do together. Set your loved one up comfortably with shade and plenty of lemonade to sip on. Your kids can run the stand, and your whole family can chat with neighbors and passersby.

Walk/Bike/Scooter to the Library: If you’re fortunate enough to live close to a library, walking to the library with a wagon can be a sweet and simple summer activity for the whole family! Return last week’s books and load up your wagon for the walk home with new books to dive into for the week. Kids can be on bikes or scooters if a parent or grandparent is pulling the wagon.

Make Nature Art: Kids love to find and collect plants and flowers. Take a neighborhood walk and gather as many unique plants, rocks, or sticks as possible. Bring your treasures home and make art together.
